Kenyan runner Peres Jepchirchir, who triumphed in the London Marathon, also improved an exceptional world record.
The Olympic champion completed the marathon in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 16 seconds. In addition, P. Jepchirchir also improved the world record, when only female runners run on the track.
This record is different from the “classic” world record, which is set when both men and women run on the same course. Since in most marathons men and women run together on the course, the chances of breaking the world record when only women run are significantly less.
This world record was previously held by another Kenyan runner, Mary Jepkosge Keitany, who ran the marathon in 2 hours, 17 minutes and one second.
It is also interesting that other runners who stepped on the podium in the heart of England would also have broken the previous world record. Ethiopian runner Tigst Assefa, who took second place in the London Marathon, covered the distance in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 23 seconds. This runner also holds the “classic” women’s marathon world record.
Kenyan runner Joyciline Jepkosgei finished in third place, running the distance in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 24 seconds.
