/ The United Nations warned, on Thursday, of the catastrophic situation in Haiti, calling for the effective implementation of the arms embargo.

“It is shocking that despite the terrifying situation on the ground, weapons are still flowing,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said in a statement, calling for “the arms embargo to be implemented more effectively.”

The United Nations warned that “the situation is catastrophic in chaotic Haiti, where more than 1,500 people have been killed in gang violence this year,” denouncing the continued “arrival of weapons into the country.”

Haiti, which was already suffering from a deep political and security crisis, has witnessed an escalation of violence since the beginning of this month, when several gangs united to attack strategic sites in the capital, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

Henry, who had long been the subject of controversy, submitted his resignation on March 11. Since then, negotiations have been underway to form a transitional presidential council.

The Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned on Tuesday that a “countless number of children” face the risk of death due to the multidimensional crisis taking place in Haiti, expressing her concern, in particular, for the 125,000 children who are at risk of acute malnutrition.

UNICEF called on the international community to quickly restore security and increase financial support, while an international mission led by Kenya to maintain security has not yet been sent.

The humanitarian response plan drawn up by the United Nations for Haiti in 2024, worth $674 million, was only 7% funded.
