The mayor of L’Houmeau, Jean-Luc Algay, says he was assaulted by one or more members of a group of Travelers, Saturday August 19 at the start of the afternoon, in a testimony given to South West. He wanted to prevent them from settling on the municipal football field of this town of about 3,000 inhabitants.

After advising them to go to the high traffic area of ​​the agglomeration of La Rochelle, “what they refused”, “A 30-year-old guy – I am 60 – belted me in the face then in the chest and I started to receive blows before being thrown against a car”he told AFP.

“Like I was prey”

“I gasped and fell to the ground. There, they filmed me saying: “The mayor is on the ground”, as if I were prey”added the city councilor, injured in the ribs and who was prescribed a temporary interruption of work for twelve days.

According to his account, the attackers then took fright and left before the arrival of the gendarmerie. The latter received his complaint “Sunday afternoon before sending the file to the La Rochelle research brigade”explained Lieutenant-Colonel Sébastien Letellier to AFP.

On July 7, the minister responsible for local authorities, Dominique Faure, detailed a plan of 5 million euros to strengthen the protection of elected officials a few days after the car-ram attack on the home of the mayor of L’Haÿ- les-Roses (Val-de-Marne). The first measures of this plan had already been announced shortly after the arson of the home of the mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique), who has since resigned.
