Amjad Amini is released after a brief detention that Iranian authorities deny

MADRID, 16 (EUROPA PRESS)

The NGO Hengaw has denounced this Saturday the “illegal detention” of Amjad Amini, father of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Kurdish girl who died just a year ago in police custody after being arrested for not wearing her veil properly.

According to a statement issued by the organization on its website, Amjad Amini has been arrested by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as soon as he left his home, and has been transferred to “an unknown location.”

Later, the Iran International television network reported that, after receiving threats and warnings from the Iranian security forces, Amjad Amini has been released from an arrest whose purposes were mainly intimidating.

However, the Iranian authorities have denied the news, calling this information false and ensuring that Amini’s father is currently at his home in the city of Saqqez, located in northwest Iran.

According to information from the official Iranian agency IRNA, the news about Amjad Amini’s arrest seeks to incite the population and worry public opinion. “This news is not true at all and this person has not been arrested,” official sources have assured the aforementioned agency.

Although Iranian authorities had warned the family not to celebrate the anniversary of their daughter’s death, the Aminis announced that “like any grieving family,” they would go to Mahsa’s grave.

According to Hengaw, the atmosphere in the town of Saqqez, and around the Amini family home and the streets leading to Mahsa’s grave, is “highly militarized” with security forces deployed and armed in the town.
