Every year, 50 million people are injured worldwide due to a road accident, many of them with permanent consequences. In Spain, the Spanish Society of Neurology estimates that at least eight out of every ten hospitalized victims of traffic accidents suffer neurological injuries.

According to data from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT)in the last year there were more than 130,000 people involved in a road accident, of which 8,500 required hospitalization for more than twenty-four hourss. According to Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), 85% of hospitalized traffic accident victims suffer permanent neurological consequences.

Despite efforts to reduce them, Traffic accidents remain the eighth cause of death globally and the first in the age group between 5 and 29 years.

For this reason, on Sunday, November 19, we commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victimsan anniversary promoted by the United Nations since 2005 and which seeks to reduce the number of victims in road accidents.

Neurophysiotherapy

Selma Peláez, Coordinator of the Neurophysiotherapy Section of the Spanish Society of Neurology indicates that it is necessary to focus on prevention to avoid both the loss of life in traffic accidents and the disability of survivors. Furthermore, he maintains that it is essential to provide care and assistance to people with permanent consequences.

“To achieve this, it is essential that victims of traffic accidents who suffer brain damage or spinal cord injury receive specific Neurophysiotherapy treatment early and intensively,” adds the specialist.

Neurophysiotherapy is a type of physiotherapy specialized in the neurological field that, according to the coordinator, is vital to minimize the consequences that reduce the autonomy and quality of life of the victims.

“This approach must have an individualized approach based on therapeutic exercise, always taking into account the preferences and objectives of the affected personas well as the family and environmental conditions so that a comprehensive and personalized neurorehabilitation plan is established,” concludes the Neurophysiotherapy coordinator of the SEN.
