At least two people have lost lifeeight others have been injured and one is missing due to a fire unleashed this friday for unknown causes on an oil platform in southeastern Mexico, according to the state-owned Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), which is working to extinguish the fire in facilities where more than 300 people worked when the event occurred. The injured are three of the PEMEX workers who are now out of danger and five other employees of a private company, reported the general director of PEMEX, Octavio Romero Oropeza, who added that none is at risk of losing their lives.

The fire started at dawn, around 5:25 a.m. (local time), on the Nohoch Alfa platform of the Cantarell complex, located on the coast of the state of Campeche. After the detection of the flames, an emergency stop was activated and four company boats were deployed in the area for control tasks.

Romero explained that “the firefighting ships arrived on time” preventing the fire from spreading to the other platforms and has ensured that they already have a strategy to “return to production quickly”. “So far, there is a report of six injured people,” reported PEMEX, in a first statement, in which has confirmed the evacuation of 321 of the 328 people who worked on the platform.

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also referred to this event during his daily press conference, although in his case he spoke of “three or four” missing people, considering the rest of the platform personnel evacuated. The president affirmed that the state oil company would update the information throughout the day.
