Analysis of “burden of participation amid conflict with the association”
Se-young Ahn (22) has decided not to participate in international competitions this month. According to the Korea Badminton Association on the 13th, Se-young Ahn announced through her team Samsung Life Insurance the day before that she would not participate in the Japan Open (20th-25th) and Korea Open (27th-September 1st) that she was scheduled to participate in this month. Se-young Ahn won both competitions last year.
An Se-young submitted a medical certificate to the association, stating that she “cannot participate in the competition due to a partial rupture of her knee ligament.” An Se-young is currently ranked 1st in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) women’s singles rankings. Players ranked in the top 15 in both men’s and women’s singles can skip the two competitions without any special sanctions only if there is a special reason, such as an injury.
There is also analysis that Ahn Se-young may have felt burdened by competing in international competitions, given the ongoing conflict with the association since winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Ahn Se-young criticized the association and the national team during an official interview after the Paris Olympics finals on the 5th, saying, “They handled my injury complacently.” Ahn Se-young suffered a right knee injury while competing in the finals of the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.
As the controversy continued, Ahn Se-young stated on the 8th, “I will tell you my thoughts and position after the Olympics are over and all the players have been sufficiently congratulated,” but she has not yet released an additional statement. During this process, there were also stories that Ahn Se-young was dissatisfied with her sponsorship contract. Among the Korean badminton players who participated in the Paris Olympics, Ahn Se-young was the only one who expressed her intention not to participate in both competitions.
