Police prefect Laurent Nuñez indicated on Wednesday that he was going to ban a gathering planned for Friday evening in the heart of Paris, launched at the call of a small ultra-right group in tribute to young Thomas, killed during a village festival in Drôme.

“We have rallies which have been announced, one in front of the Sorbonne, at the call of a certain number of ultra-right organizations. Obviously, I am going to ban it,” he underlined on the sidelines of a press conference on the security of the 2024 Olympics. “In this type of gathering, we have comments made which are comments of incitement to hatred and violence,” he continued to justify this ban.

Heirs of Generation Identity

The gathering planned for Friday evening was launched by Les Natifs, one of the heirs of Génération Identitaire, dissolved in March 2021. Initially planned in front of the Sorbonne, it was moved to Place du Panthéon, the small group announced Wednesday evening on the networks.

“Beyond already in itself the disturbance to public order represented by making this type of statement, there are disturbances to material public order, we have clearly seen what happened in Lyon, in Romans-sur-Isère. So obviously I’m going to ban this gathering,” Nuñez continued.

“There is a resurgence of ultra-right rallies”

Since the death of Thomas, 16, stabbed at the end of a village ball in Crépol (Drôme), a tragedy for which nine young people were indicted, calls to demonstrate in France from ultra-right groups have multiplied on social networks.

Last weekend, around a hundred hooded activists from different towns demonstrated violently in the streets of Romans-sur-Isère with the aim of “fighting” with young people from the Monnaie district, where several of those implicated in Thomas’ death.

Monday evening, eight people were also arrested, suspected of having participated in an undeclared procession in the city center of Lyon. Finally, in Paris, six members of the hooligan movement affiliated with the ultra-right, including four on S files, were arrested Monday evening during a gathering of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) supporters.

“There is a resurgence of ultra-right gatherings also in Paris. We are extremely attentive,” insisted the prefect. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced Tuesday that he was requesting the dissolution of three small ultra-right groups, including the Martel Division.
