Lithuania is no exception: cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in 2023 caused as much as 52.1 percent. of all deaths. Therefore, doctors advise to recognize the warning signs of a health disorder before it is too late. The right reaction can even save a life.

It goes without saying that you should visit a doctor if you feel chest pain. However, other symptoms of CVD may be less obvious.

For example, did you know that your feet can tell you about a circulatory system disease?

Specifically, these symptoms are signs of peripheral artery disease (PAD). This is a common medical condition where fatty deposits in the arteries prevent proper blood supply to the leg muscles.

Doctors at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic (USA) indicate that pain in the feet and toes while resting can be a symptom of PAL.

Most likely, such pain can occur at night while lying in bed.

You should also be concerned if the wounds on the feet and toes do not heal for a long time. Cold feet indicate impaired blood circulation.

However, PAL should first occur during physical activity. Attention should be paid if pain, cramps or discomfort appeared in the legs or buttocks.

Impaired blood circulation in the feet can also manifest itself with other symptoms.

For example, some people stop growing hair on their legs and develop nail changes such as thickening, discoloration or brittleness.

Other symptoms of PAL to look out for include:

– numbness or weakness in the legs;

– a change in the color of the skin on the legs, for example, it becomes paler than usual or turns blue;

– shiny skin;

– for men – erectile dysfunction;

– wasting of leg muscles.

Symptoms of PAL can be hard to spot because they usually don’t appear suddenly, the symptoms of the disease tend to develop slowly.

If you experience the listed symptoms, contact your family doctor immediately.
