The symptoms of anal cancer are non-specific and can also indicate much more harmless diseases. Therefore, any complaints should be clarified by a doctor.
Compared to colon cancer, according to the German Cancer Society so-called anal carcinomas are rare. Malignant tumors of the anal canal only account for one to two percent of all colon cancers. Women are twice as likely to develop anal cancer as men. As with many types of cancer, anal cancer also presents with rather unspecific symptoms. According to information from the Zurich University Hospital also occur in much more harmless diseases, such as hemorrhoids. It is therefore important to have these symptoms checked by a doctor.

The earlier a tumor is discovered, the easier it is to treat and the higher the chances of recovery usually are. Since anal cancer is difficult to detect due to its rather unspecific symptoms, you should consult a doctor and have the cause clarified if you have the following symptoms:
- Pain during bowel movements
- Itching or pain in the anal area
- Mucous discharge from the anus
- Blood admixtures or deposits on the stool
- Irregular bowel movements
- Bowel movements with a special and noticeable shape (e.g. long, thin “pencil stools” or with indentations)
- Stool can no longer be controlled, fecal incontinence
- Enlarged inguinal lymph nodes
- constipation
- Skin changes and hardening
Those affected may also suffer from a foreign body sensation as well as fatigue, weight loss or night sweats. Since other conditions, such as chronic infections in the anal area, fistulas, fissures, herpes and hemorrhoids, can occur at the same time as anal cancer, these must be given special attention and checked and monitored by a doctor.

Anal cancer: If a tumor is suspected, a tissue sample is usually taken
If the symptoms are noticeable, a careful proctological examination is usually carried out. This includes inspection of the anorectal canal. The anal canal is scanned with the finger (digital rectal examination, tactile examination). With the help of a rectum or rectumoscopy, the rectum and usually the last few centimeters of the anus are examined. During this so-called rectoscopy, a tissue sample is taken. It also usually includes an ultrasound examination through the anus. This determines the depth of penetration of the tumor and the involvement of neighboring structures.
