Take on an entire army with the only help of two warriors in Chronicles of 2 Heroes

In recent years the retro essence has been a very important part of our vice. Not only because of that reminiscence of past (and better) times, but also in many casess the developers have known how to implement new mechanics unthinkable for the machines of the time. There are plenty of examples, but when it comes to the aesthetic that is happening today, I remember cases that sounded like The Messenger o Katana Zero where the classic style of 2D titles was perfectly fused with very original elements that broke the schemes we had in our heads. Well, today we have another similar case with Chronicles of 2 Heroeswhere the pixels hide a very particular way of playing as we will see next.

The perfect couple

Infinity Experiencand along with Catness Games Studio They are in charge of us traveling to a feudal Japan and freeing the Japanese people from the oppression of Amaterasu. For this we will not have a qualified army. Instead We will only have two warriors: the samurai Kensei and the kunoichi Ayame. Both with their strengths and weaknesses, but working as a team they will be invincible in the face of any danger.

The magic of Chronicles of 2 Heroes resides mainly in the symbiosis of its protagonists. Kensei is brute force in person, and thanks to his katana and his attacks against the enemy, he will get rid of any rival that stands in front of him. He has a great defect, and that is that due to his size, he is unable to jump. Luckily for him, he will have Ayame, much more agile and with the ability to carry out attacks from a distance thanks to the use of his kunais. We will have to know how to alternate both styles to be able to overcome all the areas that will make up our journey to the facilities of Amateratsu itself.

Fight, dodge, caress

It is true that at first it becomes a bit strange to be constantly alternating between one warrior and another, I do not deny it. But little by little We will internalize the abilities of each protagonist, to such an extent that it will feel natural. There will be few times that after a jump with Ayame we have to change to Kensei to carry out an attack that takes us to the other side of the stage. A thousand and one combinations that are reinforced with all the abilities that we will find along the way.

And although the game can be completed without picking up any special movements (you have to be brave, yes), the title will invite us to get them thanks to the small challenges set up for the occasion. Chronicles of 2 Heroes is not an easy game, and that difficulty increases in those optional moments in search of secret scrolls, skills… or cats. The confrontations against the final enemies that will await us at the end of each level will not be a short walk either. But with patience and good discipline, we’ll get them sooner or later.

Fight using your head

It’s amazing how the game never stops surprising with new mechanics. It is true that some only make us stronger, but others are especially useful and change the game scheme. That if the use of Ayame’s double jump, Kensei’s dive attack, being able to alternate between both warriors in the air. Not only will it give us a greater range of options in combat, but it will will allow us to do backtracking to be able to take that object that was previously unattainable. Of course, despite these tints of metroidvania, Chronicles of 2 Heroes is fairly linear, which I appreciate.

Despite the fact that all these abilities work correctly, there is only one that I did not control very well, and that was the parry from enemy projectiles. Kensei will be able to return the kunais and arrows thrown by the rival, while Ayame, when touching one of these projectiles, will teleport behind the opponent to carry out an ambush. In both cases, the timing It is very demanding. A risk/reward factor that is not particularly important, and in my specific case, whenever I could avoid it using other techniques, I did.

The cicadas are missing in summer

The visual aspect of the game will allow us to contemplate the typical oriental backgrounds that we could find in the Land of the Rising Sun. From an Osaka with the full moon shining in the background, from the bamboo forests full of spikes and ambushes. They all work like a charm. and although we have several itineraries to complete them, we will soon see that everything is connected and the exploration makes sense. The same can be said of the music, completely inspired by times past and with that oriental touch that fits so well.

Chronicles of 2 Heroes Conclusion

Infinity Experience and Catness Games Studio want us to dress up as samurai and sharpen our reflexes in this “retro” proposal that they have developed. Apart from the claim with the setting that the game has, its mechanics combining two completely different warriors make us think our movements very well so as not to end up biting the dust. Also, thanks to the constant rain of skills that we will be unlocking, we will never have the feeling of repetition. Of course, some of these techniques will cost us blood, sweat and tears to get them. But well, they are the typical adversities that a hero has to face… or two in this case.
