Interesting proposal that is weighed down by its playability.

The existence and purpose of the human being remains a mystery to this day. One is born, grows, relates to other human beings and at the end of the road ends up underground. Well, the Spanish developers of Devilish Games next to SelectaVision have decided to represent this circle of life with Minabo: A Walk Through Life.

Minabo: A Walk Through Life It could be defined as an existentialist social simulator. In it, We will control a turnip from its birth to its death. What matters most, of course, is the journey itself, with all the series of social relationships one can weave (or reject) along the way. Thus, we are facing a surprisingly original production with a great artistic section, but which not just convince in what should be the most important thing in a video game: entertain and enjoy.

Wake up and walk, my little turnip

The playable mechanics are very simple: a small turnip is going to come out of the ground and we must give it a name. At first, he can’t even walk, so he just crawls, always forward, yes, and without looking back. In these first moments, one can only relate to their parents, seeking in them affection, dialogue, physical contact. soon, the turnip will be ready to stand on two legs and run around the worldmeeting other like-minded people, talking to them, moving faster and faster.

Minabo: A Walk Through Life It is a title that does not have a real objective, It’s more of an experience than anything else. The player is interested in seeing what happens when he interacts in a certain way with certain characters, how his personality changes over the years, what happens to the others he has met along the way, and by what death the protagonist will finally die. The main structure does not present any plot, but a simple succession of missions necessary to become familiar with the title. The first one, for example, asks to get at least three friends, a stable love relationship y die at the age of forty. Each mission can take us around 10-15 minutes to complete. Once all of them are finished, a free game mode opens up in which we can do whatever we want without any goal in mind.

Simple and easy gameplay

The gameplay is very simple as we said. Holding down the X the turnip walks automatically, being able to do it quickly or slowly, something that will affect the passage of time. Along the way you come across a bunch of turnips, of all sexes, starting with the parents themselves. By selecting these turnips with the right stick, you can interact with a series of three different options: Physical Contact, Intimacy and Belonging. If the relationship is successful, the turnip improves in that particular aspect of her personality. If it doesn’t go well, he will be disappointed and this will have a negative impact on his life.

Little by little, a personality will begin to take shape, being able to become sociable, introverted or curmudgeon. The concept of Minabo taken on its own is interesting, because no choice is as obvious as it might seem. For example, when interacting with only one of the two parent figures, we saw how the second one deteriorated much more quickly and ended up dying earlier. Relationships with others, then, are everything. But the options aren’t that obvious and the gameplay isn’t overly intuitive either. Too often, one finds oneself in certain situations (few friends, many hostilities, or vice versa) just because of a series of completely random erroneous interactions.

conclusions

Minabo: A Walk Through Life It’s definitely an interesting project.but that fails to hit the key of what a video game should be. Among the negative points we have things like an artistic section that catches the eye from the first moment, but in the long run the settings and characters become extremely repetitive, a very simple interaction system and a mission system that does not encourage you to want to continue playing as you are a simple walkthrough of what can be done in the game. Minabo does not have a real progression, something that will throw many back from the first moment. The gameplay itself is very limited and on too many occasions it is linked to the mere randomness of conditions that are impossible to control. repetitiveness and boredom that arrive in a couple of games makes Minabo: A Walk Through Life It is an interesting experiment, but it ends up being shipwrecked as a video game.
