KINSHASA – Celebration on Tuesday October 24 of the date marking the entry into force of the charter of the United Nations (UN). On this occasion, CongoForum was interested in the analysis of Jean-Claude Mputu, doctor in international relations, on the failures of this organization.

According to this expert from the University of Liège in Belgium, the UN has partially failed in its peace mission throughout the world. He illustrates his analysis by the persistence of wars opposing several States. “The United Nations has failed in its missions of peace and international security because wars have not stopped. But I wouldn’t call it a total failure. I would rather say that she cannot do it,” comments Jean-Claude Mputu.

New reforms are needed

Asked whether it is necessary to reform or completely dissolve this organization, Mr. Mputu thinks that this constitutes a necessity for this organization to regain its credibility. However, this international relations specialist expresses doubts about the acceptance of this reform by certain states.

“I would have a double answer. It is necessary for the United Nations to be able to reform itself. But are there credible reforms acceptable to all? There are also many problems there. At worst, a new organization is needed. The question is this: are states ready to reform the international system? For the UN to regain its credibility, it is absolutely necessary to reform the Security Council and especially the right of veto,” continues Jean-Claude Mputu.

However, he said he recognized the UN’s efforts in regulating armed conflicts around the world. According to him, without the UN, conflicts would be even more open, lively and monstrous.

This day is celebrated this year under the theme, “Action for Peace: Our Ambitions for the Global Goals”.
