Developer Exit Plan Games and publisher Untold Tales bring us Gang-On Balls: Chronicles, a 3D platform adventure that pleasantly surprises

The 3D platform game genre is a genre that emerged with 32-bit consoles and became saturated on 128-bit machines. Since then, rarely games that bet on this proposal. There will always be sagas like Mario, Crash Bandicoot or Ratchet & Clank where the main focus is platforms in a 3D environment, but it is in indie titles where we can find more of this type of proposals, Gang-On Balls: Chronicles is one of them. This game that puts us at the controls of completely customizable balls, we will explore totally destructible scenarios in search of hundreds of collectibles. Do you want to know how this proposal came out? We begin.

Roll and destroy

The premise of Bang-On Balls: Chronicles is simple. We are in some recording studios where 4 different movies are going to be filmed. We will be a small ball that will have to be part of this film by fulfilling a series of assignments, where we will have to fight with various enemies, collect countless collectibles and cause chaos wherever we film. Humor is an essential part of the title, each scenario or film will be a representation of some historical fact with a humorous tone. So, for example, we will see ourselves influencing the events of the space race between the US and the Soviet Union. This leads to some pretty surreal situations, like balls painted with the American flag trying to stop you from sending a rocket to the moon.

Several balls are better than one

Gang-On Balls: Chronicles stands out for the magnitude of its settings, which are completely destructible. The game consists of four different worlds, plus a hub world. These are gigantic. Each one has a series of main objectives, but we can also find other hidden objectives, as well as a sick amount of hidden collectibles. Therefore, I totally recommend exploring the various worlds in search of more than one surprise. Completing each world 100% can take more than 3 hours, so if you are a completionist like me, you will have the game for a while. If we talk about collectibles, these are aesthetic elements for our little ball. These are usually purely aesthetic, although some will grant our character various powers, such as turning enemies into sheep. In addition, blue orbs are scattered throughout the stages, which will serve as currency to buy more cosmetic items.

The controls are very basic, we have a jump button, an attack button, momentum and if we have a shield, we can cover ourselves with it. A negative aspect is the camera control. And its control is a bit bad, it is difficult to place it correctly during combat or in small spaces, where we will not know very well where we are on many occasions. The fights can also be a bit repetitive, since they are based on using momentum against the other balls, except when it comes to enemies with shields or final bosses. These bosses usually provide some new mechanics to avoid repetition. A quite positive aspect is that we have the possibility of playing cooperatively, both in split screen for 2 players, and online for 4. This makes the play much more fun and offers a multitude of possibilities to complete the different scenarios.

light and dark

The graphics of Bang-On Balls: Chronicles are quite good. The title runs on the Unreal Engine 4 and it shows. The colorful environments are very well recreated and have a lot of detail, so the game is eye-catching. The particle effects when we destroy the environments are also very well implemented, as is the use of fire, which looks quite spectacular. Another story is the technical part, where the game has more problems. The game has been reviewed in Series X and lFrame drops when there are many elements on the screen are common, as are screen freezes. It’s not a big deal that makes the game unplayable, but it is quite annoying when this happens.

As for the sound, this is correct without further ado. The game does not feature voices, as the balls will only make a series of sounds in the style of classic Lego games. The melodies that accompany us during the adventure are nice, but they don’t stand out too much. The other sound effects also comply without much fanfare. It is worth mentioning that the game is translated into Spanish.

Conclusions

Gang-On Balls: Chronicles is a game that pleasantly surprised me. I didn’t know anything about him until I was chosen to perform his analysis, and I couldn’t be happier with it. Perhaps the title has some mechanics that are a bit repetitive and some technical errors, but as a whole it more than delivers. It is a work like the ones before, platforms, collectibles and different worlds to explore, but with the possibility of playing with friends. This makes the game more possibilities and fun. For lovers of 3D platform titles, in Gang-On Balls: Chronicles we find a more than recommended proposal.
