Analysts have recorded a decrease in the speed of mobile Internet for the first time in 10 years

The average speed of mobile networks in November was 21.7 Mb / s, while a year earlier it was at the level of 24.3 Mb / s, the Kommersant newspaper reports, citing a study by Telecom Daily. The decrease in the average speed of mobile Internet occurred for the first time in ten years – from the moment when they began to actively deploy networks of the fourth generation (4G), the general director of Telecom Daily, Denis Kuskov, explained to the publication.

According to him, the decrease in speed was due to the fact that the development and modernization of networks do not keep pace with the growth of traffic and the increase in load. Over the past two years, the volume of traffic in the country has grown by 110%, said Kuskov. “Although operators have upgraded their networks by adding new base stations, there will be no increase in speeds until the introduction of the 5G standard,” he said.

The Megafon representative agrees with the expert. According to him, despite the fact that operators are increasing the capacity of existing networks, the growing load on them can provoke a deterioration in the user experience of subscribers.

“Only 5G networks can support high quality services using the 3.4-3.8 GHz band, which is optimal in terms of coverage, penetration and capital construction costs,” said a Tele2 spokesman.

VimpelCom believes that in the next two to three years, the problem of traffic growth and mobile Internet speed can be solved only by allocating a new frequency resource to operators. MTS declined to comment.

The frequency range 3.4-3.8 GHz in Russia is occupied by the military, for the deployment of 5G operators are offered to use the frequencies 4.8-4.99 GHz, the construction of a network in which is more expensive. The deployment of networks in this range will be at least a third more expensive, which means that their payback period will be longer, market participants told Vedomosti.
