New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma has resigned from the party. Sharma has sent a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi stating that he is resigning from the post of Himachal Pradesh Congress Steering Committee. Sharma’s move comes shortly after another senior leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad, refused to accept the post of chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Congress’ election campaign committee. Azad and Sharma are prominent among the G23 leaders who are demanding radical reforms in the Congress.

The Congress formed the steering committee on April 26 ahead of the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections to be held at the end of this year. In a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi informing her of her resignation, Sharma explained the reasons behind her decision. In the letter, he points out that he was not informed about some crucial meetings held in connection with the Himachal Pradesh elections. It is reported that he has stated in the letter that he is not ready for a settlement that goes beyond self-respect. At the same time, Sharma said that he will campaign for the party candidates in the elections.

A meeting was held on June 20 in which senior leaders such as Himachal Pradesh Congress president, campaign committee president and leaders of other committees formed ahead of the election attended.
