We must establish the causes of death in an indisputable way, the information is contradictory, explained the district prosecutor of Plovdiv
Can the prosecution investigate a natural phenomenon such as lightning? That’s the question people are asking after it was announced on Monday night that an inquest had been opened into the deaths of the 47-year-old man and his 11-year-old daughter who were struck by lightning near Mt Kupena in front of their 14-year-old son and brother, who was with them in Stara Planina.
Experienced lawyers, to put it mildly, were surprised by the wording. “It’s strange. Do earthquakes investigate them,” reacted rightists.
To clarify, we contacted the district prosecutor of Plovdiv, Petar Petrov.
“It is assumed that the cause of death was the lightning, but this must be established in an indisputable way. That is why a forensic medical examination must be prepared after the autopsy. An on-site inspection may also be necessary, because the information about what happened is contradictory. Only two people from the Mountain Rescue Service responded to the signal of the boy who called 112,” Plovdiv District Prosecutor Petar Petrov explained to “24 Chasa”. He added that the initiation of pre-trial proceedings in such cases is a standard procedure.
