Five days after the closure of the Cadjèhoun mosque due to the conflict between imam Issiaka Alao Ligali and the members of the management committee of the said mosque, the President of the Republic, Patrice Talon met on Tuesday October 31, 2023, the various parties as well as officials of the Islamic Union of Benin, for a resolution of the situation. At the end of the meeting, five points of agreement were adopted for the resumption of activities at this place of worship.

What you should know: From Friday November 10, 2023, the Muslim faithful of Cadjèhoun will have access to the central mosque for Friday prayers. This is one of the decisions taken during the meeting with the Head of State on Tuesday October 31, 2023. In fact, on the afternoon of Friday October 27, 2023, the Republican police prohibited access to the Cadjèhoun mosque to the faithful to hold prayers this Friday. This closure, we learned, comes from the dispute between Imam Issiaka Alao Ligali and the members of the management committee of the said mosque for several years. According to our information, since 1982 to date, the construction of the said mosque has remained in an unfinished state. “There was no shortage of help. It was not the desire to make it a flagship mosque that was lacking. But rather the greed of being able to keep the money and make it his sole object of expenditure to the very point where he intimidated the members of the management committee,” confided a source close to the matter. As a result, for almost three years, the committee has banged its fist on the table to change the situation so that expenses on the mosque are clear for all to see. This did not please the imam who began by organizing clans and revolt groups. No longer able to stand alone, the committee sent letters of complaint to the Islamic Union of Benin (UIB), which ruled everything in its favor. Following this, Imam Issiaka Alao Ligali was asked to trace the expenses. But the parties were unable to agree despite the intervention of the Islamic Union of Benin (UIB). In its extraordinary session on August 7, 2023, the UIB released a press release with 19 recommendations for the attitude to follow. Which obviously hasn’t changed anything. The crisis continued and to avoid a disturbance to public order on Friday October 27, 2023, the police decided to close it.

Between the lines : By receiving the protagonists to help them resolve their difficulty, Patrice Talon recalled the role of the State which consists, among other things, of ensuring that faith makes it possible to practice worship in a climate of harmony, peace and of tranquility. The president of the UIB, Imam Idrissou Boukari spoke of the causes and origin of this crisis and recalled the multiple attempts at reconciliation. For his part, the president of the management committee, Daouda Djibril Oro deplored before the Head of State, the solitary management by the Imam of the financial resources of the mosque, the cessation of construction work on the mosque despite the resources mobilized and the Imam’s obsession with wanting to impose his son as his deputy and successor. As for the imam of the mosque, Issiaka Alao Ligali, he expressed his full availability to reconcile with the members of the mosque management committee. In addition to the instructions given by the Head of State, it was an opportunity for UIB officials to reiterate recommendations for both parties.

Moreover : At the end of this meeting held at the Presidency of the Republic, the parties agreed on five points of view. This means that: the Management Committee is rehabilitated with the renewal of all members, its prerogatives, in particular the mobilization and transparent management of resources; the management committee is committed to developing relationships marked by respect and loyalty to the Imam and to ensuring transparent management of resources following the instructions and guidance of the Imam. The construction committee is rehabilitated with the renewal of all members and is dedicated to monitoring the construction work of the mosque with the obligation to report regularly to the management committee and to the I’lmam. The other points take into account that the Imam renounces his intention to turbanize his son and the vice Imam is rehabilitated with recognition of all his prerogatives. It should be noted that the Head of State placed great emphasis on the need for all parties to respect commitments.
