Andong City is putting all its efforts into recovering from the damage caused by heavy rain. From July 7th, an average of 246.3mm of rain fell in Andong City, including 317mm in Waryong-myeon, for four days, causing large and small damage.
A total of 294 cases of damage were reported, including landslides, flooding, and tree falls. There were also 95 cases of damage to public facilities, including roads, small public facilities, parking lots, cultural properties, and schools. 418 households and 545 people evacuated to senior centers and other places under the guidance of the village patrol team, and there were no casualties.
As the rain began to ease, the city began full-scale recovery. In order to quickly recover from the damage, a meeting was held on the morning of the 11th to share the damage situation and discuss countermeasures. At the meeting, Vice Mayor Jang Cheol-woong said, “We must deploy manpower and equipment to the entire damaged area to quickly recover,” and “Please create a control tower so that rapid and systematic recovery can be achieved.”
Mayor Kwon Ki-chang of Andong City worked hard to restore the damage in Daegok-ri, Imdong-myeon, with 50 people from the Volunteer Center, Facility Management Corporation, and the Spiritual Culture Foundation on the 10th. On the 11th, 90 people from the Volunteer Center and Local Self-Reliance Center in Daegok-ri, and 30 people from the Andong Regional Headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions in Maryeong-ri worked to restore houses and farmland. The city plans to continue to provide support to places in need of manpower through employees and organizations in the future.
Andong City Health Center conducted special quarantine disinfection centered on vulnerable areas due to concerns about waterborne and foodborne infectious diseases caused by flooding. 31 people, including 7 members of the quarantine mobile team, have been conducting mosquito and pest habitat control around vulnerable areas since the 9th.
Of the 18 areas where roads were controlled, we are doing our best to quickly return to normal for the remaining areas, except for the 7 that have been lifted, and we are also speeding up the restoration work for other areas such as houses, livestock farms, cultural assets, and rivers.
Meanwhile, disaster psychological support services are being provided for residents who are suffering from anxiety, stress, etc. On Tuesday, July 9, Andong City Mental Health Welfare Center began providing disaster psychological support to residents who are taking shelter in the gymnasium of Imdong-myeon Elementary School, and from the 10th, the Yeongnam Trauma Center is also operating the ‘Mind Peace Bus’.
Mayor Kwon Ki-chang of Andong City said, “It is truly fortunate that there were no casualties, but it is heartbreaking that many citizens suffered damage due to the flooding of their homes and other areas,” and urged his staff to “do their best to quickly investigate the damage and carry out restoration work, as this was done to our neighbors.”
