As rapid climate change approaches as a crisis, a children’s living environment practice competition is being held to recognize serious environmental issues and spread the movement for carbon neutrality through daily life practices, looking for the ‘Greta Thunberg of Andong’.

This event, hosted by the Andong City Sustainable Development Council, an organization that implements the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN and the international community, and supported by Andong City and Andong City Office of Education, is a competition that aims to enable children to feel the seriousness of climate change from a young age and to experience putting into practice things that help achieve carbon neutrality.

The environmental movement for the Earth, started by 15-year-old Swedish girl Greta Thunberg in 2018, has grown into a movement with numerous youth participating around the world, centered in Europe. We are looking for children who, like Greta Thunberg, are concerned about the Earth’s climate environment and practice carbon neutrality.

The first competition of the year will be held for children from elementary schools in the district who wish to participate. Children who participate will write down ideas that they will put into practice, make a promise to themselves, and record the content for about two months and record the practice as a video. Then, environmental experts will evaluate them and select them as Andong’s ‘Greta Thunberg’ and award them with an award. The awards will be awarded in various ways depending on the type of practice the children do, such as the ‘Greta Thunberg Award’, ‘Daily Participation Award’, ‘Epiphany Activity Award’, and ‘Together with Family Award’.

This year, two schools, Andong Elementary School and Dongbu Elementary School, applied to participate, and 31 third and fourth graders from Andong Elementary School and 50 first to sixth graders from Dongbu Elementary School will participate for approximately two months starting on July 25.

A member of the Andong City Sustainable Development Council’s Natural Environment Subcommittee and an environmental education instructor visited the school and explained the issues of climate change, the purpose of the action contest, and how to implement it. After that, the children wrote down ideas to implement, and notebooks and pencils for recording were distributed with the support of Andong City.

Children wrote about energy conservation such as pulling out unused electrical plugs, using a toothbrush cup, using a fan instead of an air conditioner or fan, and various ideas for the environment such as eating only as much as you will eat, using a tumbler instead of a disposable cup, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and they plan to put these ideas into practice.

The Children’s Living Environment Practice Competition for Carbon Neutrality, which is being held for the first time this year, will continue to be held to build consensus on making more people aware of climate and environmental issues and practicing carbon neutrality.

If children have the experience of practicing carbon neutrality, they will work to solve climate and environmental problems such as carbon neutrality as adults, and it is expected that this will also be an opportunity for adults, such as parents who watch children practicing, to participate in the movement for climate and the environment.

Andong City Sustainable Development Council plans to expand various living environment practice contests for carbon neutrality to children, youth, and adults in the future.
