On a summer night in Andong, the “Andong Cultural Heritage Night Walk, Woryeong Night Walk” (hereinafter referred to as Woryeong Night Walk) will be held for ten days from Friday, July 26 to Sunday, August 4 in the Andong Dam area, which includes Woryeong Bridge. Woryeong Night Walk is a National Heritage Office contest hosted by the National Heritage Administration, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Andong City, and organized by the Korea Spiritual Culture Foundation.
The Wolyeong Night Walk is operated with a focus on programs that shed new light on the historical value of Andong’s cultural heritage and allow citizens to more easily enjoy Andong’s cultural heritage, and is carried out through detailed programs by theme over eight nights.
In particular, as a new program this year, the LED Hahoe Seonyu Julbul Nori Spot Zone, which reinterprets the Hahoe Seonyu Julbul Nori with a modern sensibility, will be held at the Gwanpungjeong Pond, and in addition to Andong’s representative cultural heritage performances such as the Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori and Andong Notdari Balgi, there are also plans to present the Chajeon Nori and Notdari Balgi play equipment that can be indirectly experienced in the Active Zone.
As for age-specific programs, in order to meet the needs of tourists in their 20s and 30s, a Hahoe Mask MBTI lighting street based on the symbolism of Hahoe Mask characters is being created, and a night view and night road program targeting young tourists is being prepared.
Also, ‘Wolyeongbyeolgwa’ for elementary school students will be held. Wolyeongbyeolgwa is a history quiz program based on stories of Andong’s cultural heritage and the Wolyeonggyo area. It will be divided into grades 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6, and the three final winners will be awarded the Andong Mayor’s Award in addition to prizes.
Also, the Andong Cultural Heritage Salon program for all ages will be held in the Wolyeong Park area, starting with “Andong Tells You About Goryeo History” by Professor Lee Ik-ju of Seoul City University on July 26, followed by “History and Happiness Delivered by Ilta Instructors” by Jeon Han-gil of Megastudy Education on July 27, and “Why Are Korean Culture and History Promotion Important?” by Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women’s University on July 28.
Candlelight concerts will be held in the Wolyeongdae area where Seokbinggo and Seon Seonghyeok Guest House are located, and various performances such as Korean traditional music, folk songs, a demonstration of the Nodari Bapgi (traditional Korean drum) and Hahoe Byeolsingut Mask Dance will be held at the Gaemoknaru Stage.
During the same period, related events such as ‘Shinungbujeon’ hosted by the Cultural Industry Education Promotion Agency, ‘Wolyeong Moonlight Art Tour’ hosted by the Andong branch of the Korea Arts and Culture Federation, and ‘2024 Independent Cultural Heritage’ hosted by the Gyeongbuk Northern Veterans Affairs Office will be held in Gaemoknaru and Wolyeong Park.
Meanwhile, Andong Cultural Heritage Night Tour and Woryeong Night Tour were selected as the 2023 Local 100 (100 Regional Cultural Attractions) by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and will be intensively promoted domestically and internationally until this year with ‘Kikni Writer’ appointed as the promotional ambassador.
Andong City and the Korea Spiritual Culture Foundation officials said, “This year’s Woryeong Night Walk is being prepared as a unique program centered on wit, humor, and experience, breaking away from the somewhat heavy image of cultural heritage in the past. It will be operated with a focus on target-specific programs for various age groups. We hope that a new image of Andong will be conveyed to Andong citizens and tourists from all over the country who visit Woryeong Night Walk.”
