Andong City held the closing ceremony of the 5th reenactment of Toegye’s final homecoming. Andong City held the closing ceremony of the 5th Toegye Teacher’s final homecoming reenactment event in the Dosan Seowon area on Thursday, April 25, 2024.
Starting with the opening ceremony at Gyeongbokgung Palace on April 12, this closing ceremony, which concludes the 14-day schedule, will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday the 25th with about 200 people, including Andong Mayor Ki-chang Kwon, Director Kim Byeong-il of Dosan Seowon, and a reenactment group, at the Andong Dosan Seowon parking lot. I finished my last journey by walking 1km from to Jeongyodang.
The reenactment event of Mr. Toegye’s final homecoming, now in its 5th year, saw an average of more than 100 participants a day walking the same path that Mr. Toegye walked, reflecting on the spirit of ‘many good people’ and sharing the journey.
This homecoming reenactment group was attended by approximately 50 members of the general public from all over the country and 33 student reenactment members, which is twice as many as last year, for the entire schedule, showing that this event is establishing itself as a national event.
In addition, a total of 400 Andong City officials, from 20 to 60 people in each section, joined together to provide an opportunity to reflect on Toegye’s teachings as public officials and the spirit of service to citizens, and to make Toegye Homecoming Road a representative example of Korea. We walked together to establish its reputation as a pilgrimage route.
Local government heads and Confucian scholars also participated in many ways to share the spirit of Toegye. Yangpyeong-gun Mayor Jeon Jin-seon, Chungju Mayor Cho Gil-hyung, Jecheon Mayor Kim Chang-gyu, and Yeongju Vice Mayor Song Ho-jun participated in the event despite their busy schedules and expressed their welcome. In particular, at the Yeongju Isan Seowon event, a total of 200 people, including the director of Isan Seowon and Confucian scholars, attended the event. Myeong expressed his gratitude to Master Toegye for his efforts in reviving Seowon.
Through this event, I felt that Toegye’s spirit and traces were everywhere on the way home, and I was able to see how they were commemorating and remembering him and linking various contents and tourism.
Arriving at Dosan Seowon, the reenactment group officially concluded the homecoming reenactment event with a lecture at Sangdeoksa Temple and Dosan Seodang. The closing ceremony was held in that order, with a chorus of Dosan Twelve Songs, awarding and presentation of testimonials, awarding of perfect attendance walking awards, congratulatory remarks to guests, and a performance at the National Gugak Center. It went ahead.
Participants who took part in the 14-day, 13-night journey from Seoul to Namyangju, Yangpyeong, Yeoju, Chungju, Jecheon, Danyang, Yeongju, and Dosan in Andong, along the path that Toegye walked, learned about humanity and life through this reenactment event of Teacher Toegye’s homecoming. He said that it was a valuable experience that made him think about his journey again.
Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang said, “I sincerely welcome the reenactment group who walked a long 700 miles to Andong, the historical place of Toegye,” and added, “We will do our best to make the Toegye Homecoming Road a prestigious pilgrimage route in Korea and a path of humanistic spirit.” “He promised, and requested that more reenactment groups join next year’s event.
