Hollywood mourns Emmy-winning actor who dies after brief illness. He starred with Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington in “Glory”

The American actor Andre Braugher, known for the roles of detective Frank Pembleton in the TV series «Homicide» (1993-98) and Captain Raymond Holt in the crime sitcom «Brooklyn Nine-Nine» (2013-21), has died at the age aged 61 after a short illness. The announcement of his passing, which occurred on Monday 11 December, was made with a statement from his agent Jennifer Allen.

Braugher won his first Emmy Award in 1998 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for “Homicide,” after a season featuring one of the most memorable episodes, “Subway.” This is the episode in which Pembleton tries to find out if a man (Vincent D’Onofrio) stuck between a Baltimore subway train and the platform had been pushed onto the tracks, while trying to comfort him as he is dying.

Braugher’s second Emmy Award came for his portrayal of a gang leader who plans a high-stakes robbery in the 2006 TV miniseries “Thief.” He stood out in the role of Owen Thoreau Jr. opposite Ray Romano and Scott Bakula in the dramedy «Men of a Certain Age» (2009-11). Braugher earned two Emmy nominations for this role and four for «Brooklyn Nine-Nine», a series that won two Golden Globes. He was married for over 30 years to his «Homicide» co-star Ami Brabson, with whom he had three sons: Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley.

Braugher made his name on TV with the role of detective Winston Blake in the TV series “Kojak” with Telly Savalas, which aired in 1989-90, and was another policeman in the series “Hack” from 2002-04, with David Morse. In the meantime he had played a character based on a real doctor in the 2000-01 ABC series “Gideon’s Crossing” by Paul Attanasio, also creator of “Homicide”. Last February Braugher was cast as the male lead in the drama “The Residence,” about a murder mystery in the White House, which began production before being halted due to the Hollywood strikes.

Born in Chicago on July 1, 1962, Andre Keith Braugher studied at Stanford University and later at the Juilliard School in New York. He starred in 1989 with the role of detective Winston Blake in the TV series «Kojak» and in the same year he acted for the first time on the big screen in «Glory» alongside Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. He took part in many films, such as «Splinters of Fear», «Traveling Bus», «City of Angels», «Frequency», «Poseidon», «Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer” and “The Mist”. At the cinema his last film was “She Said” by Maria Schrader (2022), where he played the executive director of the “New York Times” Dean Baquet who supports two journalists whose complaint led to Harvey’s indictment Weinstein and sparked the #MeToo movement.
