Andrea Barrera, the Chilean recognized as one of the “25 women in science 2023”

technology research company 3M recognized “25 Women in Latin American Science”, which distinguishes outstanding scientists from Latin America. In its 2023 edition, the Chilean scientist Andrea Barrera was recognized for its contribution to the environment.

The academic from the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Talca, was distinguished for her research on the growth of organisms in extreme environments, as well as for her contribution to the science popularization.

The biologist is an expert in Microbiology and Genetic Engineering and among the various topics she has studied, is her work with microorganisms in extreme environments, such as Antarctica or the Atacama, and the possibility of exoplanetary growth.

His project addresses the Biocrust, which help the growth of nearby plants, acting as ecosystem engineers, being key to achieving plant growth in less habitable places. Currently, he is evaluating whether it is possible to obtain plants in exoplanetary conditions, such as on Mars.

On the other hand, Barrera is working on a children’s storybook with the history of great scientists and scientists, which is being prepared for publication.

The researcher is one of the four women selected to represent Chile, along with engineer Jocelyn Dunstan (Catholic University), Andreina García, and robotics expert Carolina Ojeda (Biobío University).
