Andrea Pazienza: his self-portrait at auction

by time news

The Comic Art auction of Art-Rite Auction House is back on Wednesday 10 November 2021 at 6 pm: one of the most popular sales among those proposed by the Milanese auction house that in a few years has been able to consolidate itself in the sector of comics, so unconventional for the Italian market and therefore highly appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts.

The catalog of November 10 includes a nucleus of over one hundred lots, for the most part by Italian authors, a choice that falls within the precise intention of the head of department Federico Manusardi to mainly enhance national artists. Great space, in particular, is dedicated to the so-called Frigiderian authors, those – that is – who come from the Frigidaire universe and from all those magazines that for content and language are associated with it such as Il Male, Cannibale, Frizzer, and who starting from at the end of the 70s they were the reference of the Italian comics both in terms of artistic impact and stylistic research.

From Andrea Pazienza to Stefano Tamburini, from Vincino to Fabio Visintin, all the leading designers of that golden moment of Italian illustration are present in the enchantment of Art-Rite.

Starting from the toplot of this auction: a rare self-portrait of Andrea Pazienza, recently exhibited in the exhibition “Pasolini Pascali Pazienza” at the Pino Pascali Foundation Museum, entitled “Paziembran”, from 1975 (50×69 cm, marker on transparent sheet, estimate € 13,000 – 18,000) .Sempre di Pazienza, together with his colleague and director Vincenzo Sparagna, is also “Basta Amore”, marker and collage on paper applied to cardboard from 1985 (estimate € 6,000 – 8,000) part of the project on “Maivista painting”, a multiform movement that ironically wanted to take sides against the canonical distinction between “art for the people” and “art for the elites”. Some works by Stefano Tamburini, including the illustration “Better a false beautiful” , mixed media and collage on paper from 1984 (estimate € 3,000 – 4,000).

Finally, among the particularly valuable lots ascribable to the Frigiderian world, the cover of the first volume of “Collezione Tempi Additional”, a magazine born with the idea of giving space to new talents, signed by Fabio Visintin (1986, mixed media on paper, 30 x 24.5 cm, estimate € 2,000 – 3,000). The presence of classical authors, such as Tacconi, Jacovitti, Micheluzzi, also included in the catalog, is also relevant. There is no shortage of modern authors, that is, the most prestigious signatures of the last twenty years: among which we note the official Ferrari GP of Emilia Romagna poster of 2020 (estimate € 3,000 – 4,000) by Patrizio Evangelisti. Lovers of illustration will finally appreciate the presence of two Bonellians: Enrique Breccia, who participates in the auction with the pag. 129 of Tex – Capitan Jack (estimate € 600 – 1,200), and Akab whose original table is presented on p. 20 of the Dylan Dog Color Fest n. 16 (estimate € 500 – 700).
