Google Rolls Out “No Data Wipe” Update for Android 16 QPR1 Beta Testers
google is easing the exit process for users participating in the Android 16 QPR1 Beta program with the release of a new over-the-air (OTA) update that allows testers to leave the program without losing their data. this update addresses a common pain point for beta testers who frequently enough face a factory reset to revert to a stable Android version.
The new OTA update, currently rolling out to Beta 3.1 testers, eliminates the need for a data wipe when opting out of the Android Beta Program.Users can verify the update’s availability by navigating to Settings > System > Software updates > System updates, where the system should indicate “Android Beta Exit No Data Wipe.” The update itself is relatively small, weighing in at under 100 MB, and includes the September 2025 security patch.
Those who previously opted out of testing the QPR2 Beta 1 version did so through google.com/android/beta, and this new update streamlines the process for those still within the QPR1 Beta program. According to reports, the rollout isn’t happening together for all devices.
Initial reports indicate the OTA is available on the Pixel Tablet, but not yet on the Pixel 8a or Pixel 9a. While some users are reporting prosperous installations on other phone models, the update is not yet widely available. This staggered rollout mirrors the initial release of the 16 to 16 QPR1 update, suggesting Google is intentionally gating the distribution. A “custom update” confirmation was received after installation, and a extensive list of fixes included in the update can be found [here](link to fixes – placeholder).
This move by Google demonstrates a commitment to improving the beta testing experience for Android users. By removing the data wipe requirement, the company is lowering the barrier to entry for participation and encouraging more feedback on pre-release software. This ultimately contributes to a more stable and refined Android experience for all users.
