Google has launched a native, wireless migration tool for Android 17 that allows users to move data directly from an iPhone without third-party software. The update supports contacts, messages, passwords, and eSIM profiles, aiming to reduce the friction of switching platforms. It is currently rolling out to select Pixel devices and the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8.
Android 17 Eliminates Third-Party Transfer Apps
Expanding Beyond Basic Content Transfers
The migration system integrated into Android 17 moves well beyond basic contact and photo transfers. The tool handles a significantly broader range of data, allowing users to wirelessly port Google Account information, Wi-Fi credentials, passwords, passkeys, and eSIM profiles from iOS to Android.
Previous methods often required physical cables and frequently left behind alarms, call history, and downloaded files. The new system captures a more complete digital snapshot, including accessibility settings, apps, calendar entries, email accounts, images, videos, notes, WhatsApp data, and home screen layouts. Google describes this shift as moving from simple content transfer to identity transfer.
By including passkeys and eSIM support, the company aims to ensure mobile service connectivity survives the move, preventing the first day with a new device from becoming “admin hell.”
System-Level Collaboration with Apple
A primary goal of this update is the removal of third-party migration applications. The system was built in collaboration with Apple to allow for deeper, system-level data access. Because the functionality is embedded directly into the operating system, users no longer need to install separate software or grant multiple permissions to initiate the move.
The process is designed to be straightforward. During the setup of an eligible Android device, the phone displays a QR code to begin the transfer from an iPhone. Google states that both wired and wireless transfers now offer identical capabilities, creating a more consistent setup experience. By streamlining authentication flows and carrier settings, Google is attempting to lower the barriers to switching smartphone ecosystems.
Initial Rollout on Pixel and Samsung Flagships
The rollout prioritizes Google’s own hardware and its largest partner. The upgraded experience is currently available on select Pixel devices and the newly unveiled Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8 series, which were introduced at the Galaxy Unpacked event. For Samsung users, the functionality arrives alongside Android 17 and Samsung’s One UI 9. While Samsung has already started the One UI 9.0 beta program, Google has not provided a specific timeline for when the tool will expand to other Android devices.
Gemini Integration and Remaining Gaps
Alongside these migration updates, Google announced that Gemini automation now works with more than 40 popular apps, including Etsy and Expedia. On the Z Flip8, users can access these features from the Flex Window by holding down the power button. The Z Fold8 series also includes Gemini Notebook for drag-and-drop multitasking and six months of Google AI Pro.
Despite the comprehensive nature of the new tool, some gaps remain. While the system is more robust than previous iterations, photo albums are still listed as coming soon. The initiative reflects Google’s broader strategy to remove the inconvenience of leaving, as the company aims to attract more iPhone users to the Android ecosystem.
