Consumers connected to the national electricity system have not paid an additional fee on electricity bills for over a year

The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) informed this Friday, 26, that it will keep the green tariff flag activated in June and, therefore, the light bills follow without additional charge. The level, according to the regulatory body, reflects the favorable conditions for power generation in the country.

Consumers connected to the national electricity system have not paid an additional fee on electricity bills for over a year. The threshold has been in effect since April 16, 2022, after months of charging the “water scarcity flag”, created due to the serious water crisis that the country faced in 2021.

The expectation, according to the agency, is to maintain the level in the coming months. “Aneel constantly updates its projections for activating the tariff flags and, with the data available so far, it considers the triggering of the green flag to be very likely for the entire year of 2023,” it said in a note.

The agency also reinforced that the abundant supply of hydraulic resources has provided favorable conditions for energy production in the country. “The storage level of the reservoirs reached 87% on average at the beginning of the dry period, which explains the favorable scenario at the moment.”

tariff flags

The tariff flag system was created in 2015 to indicate the costs of energy generation in the country to consumers and mitigate the impacts on the budgets of energy distributors.

Before, the cost of energy in moments of more difficulties for generation was passed on to tariffs only in the annual readjustment of each company, with interest. In the current model, resources are charged and transferred to distributors on a monthly basis through the “Flags account”.

The green flag, when there is no additional charge, means that the cost of producing energy is low. The yellow and red flags 1 and 2 represent an increase in the cost of generation and the need to activate thermal plants, which is mainly related to the volume of the reservoirs.
