Unfortunately, given the escalation of violence we are witnessing in Puglia, it is already happening. And without immediate intervention, it will only get worse”. This is how Filippo Anelli, president of the Bari Medical Association, commented on the news of yet another attack on a doctor on call, this time in Minervino di Lecce.
“I express on a personal basis and on behalf of the Medical Association that I represent solidarity with the assaulted colleague and with the Order of Lecce. – continues Anelli -. We greatly appreciated the initiative of the ASL of Lecce which together with the Fimmg of Lecce asked the prefect for a meeting to evaluate how to stem the wave of episodes of violence against doctors that are occurring one after the other”.
“We must acknowledge that violence against healthcare workers is now endemic in our society, like a disease that cannot be completely eradicated. And women are often the ones who pay the highest price. The system must organize itself to guarantee safety for workers – adds Anelli – safety which, I remind you, is a constitutionally protected right”. “Doctors and other healthcare workers – he adds – cannot be left alone, as the film Notturno produced by Fnomceo (National Federation of the Orders of Surgeons and Dentists) already denounced in 2020 to highlight the loneliness of medical guards”.
