Angela Benedetti, sister of former ambassador Armando Benedetti and a close figure in Gustavo Petro’s presidential campaign, made shocking revelations about her experience during and after the campaign. Benedetti, who was an active collaborator in the campaign, detailed her relationship with Verónica Alcocer, the first lady of Colombia, and her perception of Alcocer’s role in the government.

Benedetti confessed that during the presidential campaign she shared a close relationship with Alcocer, participating together in events and activities. However, that closeness quickly faded after Petro’s inauguration on August 7, 2022. Benedetti expressed her frustration at losing contact with the presidential couple and mentioned that her attempts to resume dialogue were ignored. According to her, Alcocer showed no interest in assuming a traditional role as first lady, especially on social issues, which contributed to her disillusionment.

She also revealed that during the campaign, Alcocer and his inner circle, including Catalan advisers, asked collaborators whether they would prefer to obtain a position or do business if Petro won the elections. Benedetti also claimed that Alcocer offered her the position of head of the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare (ICBF) six months before the campaign ended, which she said indicated a strong influence by Alcocer in certain government appointments. Benedetti suggested that Alcocer’s interest in the ICBF and other bodies had more to do with power control than with a genuine commitment to social welfare.

The woman did not spare criticism of Gustavo Petro, describing him as a disorganized and disconnected leader. She expressed concern about the apparent lack of direction in his government, suggesting that instead of advancing campaign promises, Petro’s administration has been embroiled in scandals and internal controversies. Benedetti said she felt used during the campaign, and noted that, after fulfilling her purpose, she was removed from the inner circle of power.

From his perspective, Petro’s administration is marked by the improvisation and lack of planning, which has prevented the Government from making effective progress in implementing key policies. This perception of chaos and disorganization, according to Benedetti, has generated frustration both within the government and among those who supported Petro in the hope of significant change.
