It was a promise made during the Agricultural Show. President Emmanuel Macron will receive agricultural union organizations “next week”, government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot announced this Wednesday after the Council of Ministers, specifying that this aimed to “continue to move forward”. “The Prime Minister (Gabriel Attal) received the main trade union organizations Monday evening in Matignon,” added Prisca Thevenot.

Representatives of three agricultural unions indicated that Gabriel Attal had asked them during this meeting what measures the President of the Republic could announce at their next meeting to put an end to the mobilization of farmers. Monday evening, “the Prime Minister asked us about the measures that the President of the Republic could announce to ensure that this episode of agricultural demonstrations which now dates back several months is put to an end,” indicated Arnaud Rousseau, the boss of the FNSEA, the majority agricultural union.

“Four or five points to present to the President”

Sophie Lenaerts, vice-president of Rural Coordination, attested that Gabriel Attal had “asked them for four or five points to present to the President so that the mobilization stops”. A request also confirmed by Sophie Bezeau, director of Modef, the fifth agricultural union.

The government, in an attempt to appease the anger of the profession which exploded in January, has already committed to numerous projects. The protest movement has subsided since the beginning of February but actions are still carried out sporadically and the unions remain demanding. For example, the Rural Coordination carried out an action this Monday in Bordeaux (Gironde) in front of the hotel in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and in front of the department prefecture.
