According to the report presented during the event, called “8 Billion Lives-Infinite Possibilities”, the prevalence rate of modern contraceptives in the country is one of the lowest in the region, with 12.5% ​​and 38% of married women having an unmet need for family planning.

According to Mady Biaye, the UNFP plans to cover the unmet need for planning by 2030 and reduce it to 19%, which would prevent around 1,300 maternal deaths, 99,000 unsafe abortions and 570,000 unwanted pregnancies per year .

Under the motto “What women and girls want is important”, World Population Day 2023 made it possible to address topics such as gender inequality, birth and death rates, population growth in Angola, HIV prevalence, data on sexual and domestic violence, among others.

World Population Day was proclaimed in Resolution 45/216 adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 21, 1990, with the aim of raising awareness of population-related issues and recognizing the importance of demographic policies in the socio-economic development of countries. .

The act included interventions by the Ministers of Economy and Planning, Social Action, Family and Women’s Promotion.
