News from Angola – Angola has become one of the main actors in the context of Southern Africa, in the political, economic and military spheres. With the emergence of new dams that can benefit countries in the region and the projection of the Lobito corridor, as well as the connection of the 2África fiber optic cable, it will create the interest of some countries in purchasing some services from ANGOSAT2, the potential of the new dams from Cunene, will be able to guarantee energy to Namibia and Botswana.

In the military field, Angola is one of the major presence of the militarized contingent that comes to face terrorism in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, and it is a force that is strengthening the ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

As for commercial integration, the strengthening of the fabric industry in the region, agricultural and industrial production stands out.

In this region of Southern Africa of which Angola is a part, the member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) stand out.

In terms of sustainable industrialization in the region, the country will be able to leverage its economy, taking into account the geostrategic positioning of the Lobito Corridor.

Angola should to some extent increase dynamism in matters of representation and gender equality, mobility between Member States, implementation of commercial and economic exchanges, as well as in actions to combat climate threats.

As for Information and Communication technologies, an excellent opportunity opens up for the country to sell Angosat 2 services, a bet by the Executive to reduce the digital exclusion of Angola and the continent.

With this technology, Angola is in a position to expand telecommunications services to the most remote areas of the country and member states, at competitive prices.

The Southern African block comprises Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

In the view of economist Osvaldo Funa, for the rotating presidency of SADC 2023-2024 to benefit the current Angolan executive, some key actions can be considered:

Osvaldo Funa understands that it is necessary to define clear priorities: The Angolan government must establish specific priorities for the presidency, identifying areas where the country can make a significant positive impact.

According to him, it is essential to promote Regional Cooperation: Fostering collaboration among SADC member countries is essential. Angola can encourage joint actions to address regional challenges such as security, economic development and health.

Economic Growth in Angola

The Angolan Government forecasts a growth of 1.09% in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2023, against the initially forecast average of 3.6%, according to the national director for Planning, Álvaro David.

The Review of the Macroeconomic Executive Program for the year 2023, underlined that the balance of payments deficit will amount to USD 319 million, with International Reserves standing at USD 13,943.30 million, equivalent to 7.11 months imports of goods and services.

In this sense, it is recommended the immediate and effective implementation of measures to stimulate the economy and boost its potential, within the scope of the recently approved economic diversification process, which aims to increase domestic production of essential products for wide consumption, in order to reduce the general price level and the unemployment rate.

In Angola, the Summit takes place under the motto: “Human and financial capital: The main factors for the sustainable industrialization of the SADC region”.

By assuming the organization’s third presidency today, Angola will have the opportunity to show its potential at various levels and help in the pacification of conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Cabo Delgado (Mozambique).
