He campaigns for “strict reciprocity”. The LR deputy Antoine Vermorel-Marques (Loire) has tabled a bill to prohibit the importation of agricultural products which do not respect the standards imposed in France on farmers, he indicates in an interview posted online Friday on the website of Figaro.

“In the name of strict reciprocity, we propose to prohibit the import of what is prohibited from being produced in France,” asserts the MP, denouncing “unfair competition” which represents a “loss of income” for French farmers “ 10 billion euros,” he estimates.

Antoine Vermorel-Marques targets “meat fed on animal flour, GMO cereals from Ukraine” and “tomatoes from the Maghreb, treated with dichloropropene, a potentially carcinogenic substance banned for 15 years in Europe”.

The Egalim law to rethink

The bill received the support of LR boss Éric Ciotti and that of the LR group in the Assembly Olivier Marleix, he told AFP. In the eyes of MP LR, article 44 of the Egalim law on the sharing of value between players in the French food chain is “inoperative”.

It “targets sellers and not importers”, deplores Antoine Vermorel-Marques, who recalls that his party had not voted for the 2018 text and believes that we must “make the big ones responsible (and) set sanctions, which does not make the Egalim law.” “We have enshrined a strong principle in the law, but we have not imposed any sanctions. It’s like playing football without a referee,” he adds.

For several days, farmers have been demonstrating to denounce unfair competition with countries which sell their products in France and do not have to respect the same standards as them.
