New Delhi Lt. General (Retd.) Anil Chauhan is the new Joint Chiefs of Staff. Anil Chauhan, who was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command of the Army, retired from the army last year. The appointment comes nine months after the first Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Bipin Rawat, died in an accident.

Anil Chauhan also has experience as the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Army. He was also the Chief of Army Command (Spear Corps) based in Dimapur, Nagaland. He was awarded Kirti Chakra for excellence in military service. He has also led anti-terror operations in Kashmir and North Eastern states.

General Bipin Rawat, who took over as India’s first Chief of Defense Staff in January 2020, died last December 8 when a military helicopter crashed in Tamil Nadu. All 14 people in the helicopter, including his wife, died.
