Recent research conducted by Philippe Pinckaers from the NUTRIM research institute of Maastricht University and Maastricht UMC+ has shed light on the muscle-building properties of animal vs. vegetable proteins. The study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, found that a meal with meat results in faster muscle production compared to a vegan meal with the same amount of protein.

The study focused on the continuous breakdown and rebuilding of muscles, a process that requires protein from food. Animal sources such as meat, cheese, and yogurt and vegetable products such as beans, nuts, and soy milk were compared, with previous research already indicating that animal proteins have better muscle-building properties than vegetable proteins.

To investigate how muscles react after eating a complete meal, Pinckaers had sixteen participants over the age of 65 come to the laboratory twice for dinner. On one occasion, they were served a vegan meal consisting of quinoa with chickpeas, broad beans, soy beans, and soy sauce, while on the other day, they were served a meal with beef tartare, potatoes, green beans, apple sauce, and herb butter. Both meals had a similar amount of protein, fat, carbohydrates, and calories.

Before the meals, the participants received an infusion of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins essential for muscle building. The researchers then took small pieces of muscle tissue from the participants and measured the amount of marked amino acids. The findings revealed that muscle proteins were built faster after eating a meal with animal proteins, indicating that a vegan meal does not have the same capacity to stimulate muscle growth.

The researchers attributed this difference to the fact that plant-based food products are more difficult to digest and naturally contain fewer essential amino acids. This research provides valuable insights for individuals looking to optimize muscle production through their dietary choices.

This study serves as a reminder that the source of protein in a meal can have a significant impact on muscle production, and individuals, particularly older adults, may want to consider incorporating animal-based proteins for optimal muscle growth.]
