Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that Ankara seeks to conduct marine surveys to search for hydrocarbons in Libyan maritime areas.

The minister revealed that there are areas in which Tripoli and Ankara are close to reaching an agreement, with possible developments on the horizon, according to him.

In an interview published by the Turkish newspaper Sabah on Friday, Bayraktar considered Libya a major country in energy resources.

The Minister stressed Türkiye’s interest in offshore and onshore oil and natural gas projects in Libya.

Bayraktar also stressed that the Black Sea is a higher priority for Turkey in the field of hydrocarbon exploration compared to the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas.

“The potential of the Mediterranean seems to be higher than that of the Aegean Sea, but the Black Sea holds the most promising potential. Therefore, our current priorities are: Sakarya, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean,” he said.

In 2019, Turkey and the Government of National Accord in Tripoli signed a maritime memorandum of understanding, defining the exclusive economic zones claimed by each.

While Greece rejected the legitimacy of this agreement, arguing that it does not take into account Greece’s maritime zones.
