A man attacked with a knife toddlers and an elderly person, Thursday morning, in a park in Annecy (Haute-Savoie). Some were injured in their pushchairs, in front of their parents. Very quickly, the face of the man capable of committing such an act flooded social networks and news channels continuously.

A video shows the assailant, knife in hand, running away from those trying to arrest him. But above all, you should not relay, nor even comment on or “like” this content, reminds the gendarmerie, faced with the success of the video. “Internet users who broadcast and share videos showing violence to people are subject to criminal penalties,” said the commander of the gendarmerie on Twitter.

Indeed, the dissemination of violent content online can fall under several articles of law. Article 222-33-3 of the Penal Code provides that the recording or dissemination of images of acts of barbarism or violence is punishable by five years’ imprisonment and a fine of 75,000 euros, except for journalists or when the recording “is made in order to serve as evidence in court.

Originally, this law was born to fight against “happy slapping” (“happy slap”) – a phenomenon which consists of filming the victims of aggression and then broadcasting the images – so that whoever records the scene is considered an accomplice. facts.

In addition, “the fact of manufacturing, transporting, disseminating, whatever the medium, a message of a violent nature (…) is punishable by three years’ imprisonment and a fine of 75,000 euros when this message is likely to be seen or perceived by a minor”, also provides article 227-24 of the Penal Codewhich is the case on social networks.

“Don’t spread them, don’t like them”

The Ministry of the Interior has also disseminated the same message, even encouraging Internet users to report this content. “If you spot offensive content on social media, help us: don’t post it. Don’t like them. A single reflex: report them on the Pharos platform. »

Pharos is the illegal content reporting platform circulating on the Internet, whatever their nature (image, text, video, tweet). They must be reported as soon as they contain violence, endangerment of persons, apology for terrorism, insults or defamation, incitement to racial hatred, discrimination or attacks against minors.

“It shouldn’t be a private matter with someone you know, even if they’re using the internet to harm you,” Pharos says. In this case, you must file a complaint with the police station or the gendarmerie.
