Pope Francis invited the new rector of the Lateran University, Bishop Alfonso V. Amarante, to announce the Gospel with truth and joy to strengthen the institution and its role in contemporary society.
“It is a matter of making the Lateran University more robust and agile in order to better honor its first task: to announce the truth and joy of the Gospel through study, reflection and academic work”, reads the letter of the Holy Father this Tuesday. August 1 addressed to Bishop Amarante.
In the letter, the Pontiff stresses the importance of completing the work begun by Professor Vincenzo Buonomo, his predecessor in office. The Holy See Press Office also reported that Professor Buonomo today received the Pope’s appointment as General Councilor of Vatican City State.

To achieve the proposed objective, the Bishop of Rome announces the appointment of a Director General who will collaborate with the administrative and economic management, and will help in the elaboration of a strategic development plan. The purpose of this plan is to make the Pontifical Lateran University a “prominent protagonist” of the ecclesiastical and civil university system.
In academic and administrative planning, the Holy Father urges taking advantage of the signs of the times and collaborating with the Pontifical Institutes associated with the University. The participation of the competent university bodies will be essential to support the changes required in “didactics” and “management”.
The Pontiff also mentions the creation of the Superior Coordination Council through a Rescript of August 21, 2021. The Council will be enriched by the incorporation of qualified figures from the Roman Curia and the university world, strengthening the link between the Lateran University and the Headquarters. apostolic.
The process will begin on September 12 and the University is expected to actively participate in it.
