He annual report of the Pence of San Pedro reveals that during the year 2022 107 million euros were donated, of which 95.5 were destined to support the apostolic mission of the Pope. In 2021 he raised 47 million euros.

In the days prior to the Solemnity of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, which is celebrated on June 29, in most parishes the call for the collection of the Saint Peter’s Pence is made.

As the Vatican website explains, the Pence of San Pedro is “an economic aid” that the faithful offer to the Holy Father “as an expression of support” for the needs of the Church in the world and the works of charity that it carries out.

The collection is carried out in all the dioceses on the “World Day of Charity of the Pope”, every June 29 or on Sunday closest to the Solemnity of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

The recent report specifies that the expenses for the year 2022 were 95.5 million euros. Among the different donations, which come from the dioceses, private donors, religious orders or foundations, a total of 107 million was collected.

The donations received from the dioceses amounted to 27.4 million euros, followed by the foundations, with 12.6 million euros.

The United States became the country that donated the most amount, with 11 million euros (25.3%), followed by South Korea (8%), Italy (6.7%), Brazil (3.4%) and Germany (3%).

Contributions granted support the activities of the departments, entities and agencies of the Holy See, as well as the promotion “of charitable initiatives in favor of those in need”.

From the Pence, 77.6 million euros were delivered to support the activities promoted by the Holy See and carry out the apostolic mission of the Holy Father. In addition, 16.2 million euros were used for direct assistance projects for the most vulnerable.

Among the groups that received this aid are individuals and families in need, migrants and refugees, dioceses, parishes, religious institutes and populations affected by natural disasters or conflicts, especially the war in Ukraine.

The projects were distributed in 72 countries, with Africa being the continent that benefited the most. Part of the money raised has been used to build a medical center in Peru, a school for immigrants in Vietnam or maternity and pediatric wards in Haiti.

The report recalls that these contributions also favor the apostolic mission of the Holy Father, which includes activities such as the proclamation of the Gospel, the promotion of human development, the formation of priests, diplomatic efforts for peace and the promotion of fraternity among peoples.
