A photo of a tourist swimming in only her underwear in a fountain at a famous tourist attraction in Florence, Italy has sparked controversy.
According to the Daily Mail and other sources on the 1st (local time), a video was recently spread on social media showing a female tourist swimming in a fountain in the Piazza Santo Spirito in Florence, Italy, topless and wearing only black underwear.
In the video, the English-speaking woman swam around the fountain. She even invited her friends sitting on the fountain to join her. However, all of her friends refused, so she enjoyed swimming in the fountain alone. None of her friends tried to stop her.
Italian netizens who saw the video expressed their anger, saying things like, “They don’t seem to have any sense of shame,” “Do they have no sense of hygiene?” “Tourists need to respect the countries they are visiting,” “Tourists like this should be deported,” and “This is shameful and rude.”
Some netizens responded with comments such as, “That water won’t even clean the drain,” “Swimming in a tub of sewage,” and “Vagabonds and dogs bathe in that water.”
Two female tourists who had previously visited Florence were caught on camera climbing a statue of Bacchus, the god of wine, and committing an obscene act, sparking outrage among local residents.
Criticism continued even among cultural heritage experts at the time.
“Rude and barbaric acts continue to go unpunished,” said Patrizia Asproni, president of Concultura, an association that promotes Italy’s cultural heritage. “We need strict controls, huge fines and a zero tolerance approach, like in Singapore.”
“Tourists should be welcomed, but they should respect our works of art, whether they are originals or replicas,” said Florentine archaeologist Antonella Rinaldi, “although I doubt that the female tourist I am criticizing knows the difference.”
