San Lorenzo continues to accumulate debts and problems in the judicial arena. Chamber I of the Labor Court issued a final ruling in the trial initiated by Ignacio Piatti, former midfielder of the club, and ordered the “Ciclón” to pay him a little more than 2.7 million dollars.

This decision comes after an appeal of a previous ruling, which in April 2023 had stipulated the payment of $800,000 to the footballer in unpaid wages. In the new ruling, the amount was increased after considering the compensation for the early termination of Piatti’s contract, in addition to the unpaid wages that had been taken in the first instance.

The conflict began at the end of 2021, when Piatti left the club a year before his contract expired due to San Lorenzo’s decision to reduce his salary through a contractual clause. In his lawsuit, the former player claimed around seven million dollars, in a combination that included back wages, interest and compensation for the interruption of the contract.

In the first instance ruling, the court had only recognised the payment of the salaries, but the Labour Court modified that ruling and ordered full payment, albeit with a deduction of almost 950 thousand dollars in sums that the club claims to have paid. However, Piatti’s representatives deny having received that money and plan to appeal the decision again.

This ruling adds to a long list of legal problems that San Lorenzo has faced in recent months, due to the actions of Marcelo Tinelli, Matías Lammens and Horacio Arreceygor. In August, the club managed to overcome two prohibitions presented by former players, which allowed the registration of its new reinforcement, the Spaniard Iker Muniain.

Among the commitments settled by the leadership at that time, the debts with Diego Rodríguez, Tijuana of Mexico (for the transfer of “Torito”), Monterrey of Mexico (for Adam Bareiro), Ferencváros of Hungary (for Carlos Auzqui) and Independiente Santa Fe of Colombia (solidarity mechanism for Yeison Gordillo) stand out, which totaled an amount greater than three million dollars.

In addition, San Lorenzo also had to face claims from Fabricio Formiliano and Cristian Zapata, whose lawsuits raised the debts to about 250 thousand dollars plus interest. Despite having settled these commitments, the judicial storm does not seem to have an end in Boedo and the leadership now awaits a favorable appeal in the Piatti case that allows the amount to be paid to be reduced, in the midst of an increasingly complicated economic situation.
