Since the beginning of 2023, no less than 465 mass shootings took place in the United States. And this Wednesday, a new massacre took place in California. In this western American state, a man opened fire in a bar, killing three people and injuring several others, local police said. The suspect also died, law enforcement added, bringing the provisional death toll to four.
“We confirm that four people died at the scene, including the shooter. Six were taken to hospital, five with gunshot wounds,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said on X (ex-Twitter). “Shooting involving a police officer occurred during the incident,” the police said, adding that none of their members had been injured.
According to information from Los Angeles Times, the shooter, who was a retired police officer, was targeting his estranged wife. The Cook’s Corner bar in south Los Angeles, where the shootings took place, is a well-known meeting point for bikers in the area.
More guns in the United States than people
The United States pays a very heavy price for the dissemination of firearms on its territory and the ease with which Americans have access to them.
The country has more individual weapons than inhabitants: one in three adults owns at least one weapon and nearly one in two adults lives in a home where there is a weapon. The consequence of this proliferation is the very high rate of death by firearm in the United States, without comparison with that of other developed countries.
