(ANSA) – CARACAS, AUGUST 27 – In the context of the serious institutional crisis that began with the controversial re-election to the presidency of Venezuela until 2031, Nicolas Maduro has decided to “strengthen” his leadership by surrounding himself with hawks and loyalists. This, according to Maduro himself, is the meaning of the profound government reshuffle announced today and especially of the appointment of the number two of the United Socialist Party (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, to head the Ministry of People’s Power, Interior, Justice and Peace. “Diosdado brings good luck, he knows a lot about peace and he knows a lot about justice” the Chavista leader said with cynical irony when announcing the appointment. And it’s just that the number two of the PSUV has a reputation for being implacable with his adversaries and especially with dissidents. This characteristic is perfectly represented by the giant club with which Cabello is portrayed in his television program “Dando mazzate” (‘With the club giving’), from where he usually points out and threatens any opponent who dares to oppose the Bolivarian government. Once installed at the head of the Ministry of the Interior, Cabello will have full control over a good portion of the government’s repressive and surveillance apparatus, with the exception of the Armed Forces. In fact, the Bolivarian National Police (PNB), the Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations Corps (CIPC), the Administrative Service for Migratory Identification (SAIME) which issues passports and identity documents, and the Autonomous Service of Notarial Registers will depend on him.
