Ansan, South Korea, Expands Community-Based ‘Sharing School’ Model for Students

Expanding access to localized learning opportunities, the Ansan Education Support Agency in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, is bolstering its ‘Woori-dong Sharing School’ initiative. This program connects students with educational experiences within their own neighborhoods, moving learning beyond the traditional classroom setting.

The sharing school model prioritizes “local cooperation education,” aiming to provide students with learning opportunities unrestricted by time or location. This approach emphasizes accessibility, allowing students to participate in educational activities within their immediate living zones.

Launch of ‘Uri-dong Sharing School’ Program

On July 30, the Blue Regional Children’s Center in Ansan Danwon-gu initiated the first program under the ‘Uri-dong Sharing School’ umbrella. This initial offering specifically targets 20 elementary school students from multicultural families. The program focuses on activity-based classes designed to foster emotional recovery through art and reading treatment, addressing key areas like emotions, self-awareness, and stress management.

The 12-hour program, running through August 14, is a collaborative effort with the Gyeonggi-do Office of Education. It represents a significant step in providing tailored support to students navigating the challenges of adapting to new cultural environments.

Expanding Program Offerings with Sports-Focused Initiatives

Looking ahead, the Ansan Office of Education and Support is planning to partner with the Ansan Urban Corporation to introduce the ‘Ansan Dongri Uri-dong Sharing School’ program. This new initiative will center around a variety of sports activities, including basketball, soccer, and badminton.

The goal is to encourage students to engage in physical activity, promote healthy development, and cultivate a stronger sense of community consciousness. This expansion demonstrates a commitment to holistic education, recognizing the importance of both academic and physical well-being.

“The sharing school is a realization of regional-based education where students experience learning in everyday life,” stated a training center official. This sentiment underscores the program’s core philosophy: to integrate learning seamlessly into the fabric of students’ daily routines.

The expansion of the ‘Woori-dong Sharing School’ model signals a broader trend toward localized, community-driven education in South Korea, offering a promising pathway to more accessible and engaging learning experiences for all students.
