Anseong City, Biochar Production Plant for Resource Recycling Opens

Anseong City (Mayor Kim Bo-ra) announced that it held an opening ceremony on August 22 to announce the full-scale operation of the ‘Resource Recycling Biochar Anseong Camp’ together with prospective social enterprise 4EN (CEO Lee Ho-cheol) and NH Investment & Securities (CEO Yoon Byeong-un).

The first fruits of the joint public-private efforts of Anseong City, prospective social enterprises, and financial companies to realize resource recycling have been achieved in Anseong City.

The ‘Resource Circulation Biochar Anseong Camp’ was completed in December of last year. It is a large-scale production facility with a floor space of 643 pyeong and a factory area of 256 pyeong located in Seongju-ri, Wongok-myeon, Anseong-si. It produces biochar, which is an eco-friendly carbon-neutral fertilizer material, using coffee grounds (coffee grounds) discarded after extracting coffee as a raw material.

The establishment of the Anseong Biochar production plant was promoted as part of the ‘Local Resource Circulation System Construction’ project that Anseong City has been carrying out. As part of this project, Anseong City collects coffee grounds discharged from cafes in the city through 4EN’s ICT (Information and Communication Technology)-based collection control system, and also seeks to create jobs for the elderly in conjunction with the Anseong Senior Club during the collection process. Since the collection route and quantity are checked through the control system, more efficient collection is possible than the general coffee grounds collection work, and participating cafes are also satisfied because they can easily dispose of coffee grounds waste. Currently, about 4.5 tons of coffee grounds are collected per month from about 100 cafes in Anseong City.

The launch ceremony was attended by Anseong Mayor Kim Bo-ra, City Council Speaker Ahn Jeong-yeol, relevant public officials, and local citizens. Through a tour of the biochar production process and an event where biochar fertilizer made from coffee grounds was directly distributed to flower pots, the meaning of sustainable resource circulation was reconsidered.

Mayor Kim Bo-ra emphasized, “With the biochar production facility that has been prepared for several years now fully operational, we are one step closer to completing the ‘Anseong-type resource circulation system,’” and added, “I expect that our city will take the lead in resource circulation and carbon neutrality practices through cooperation with various stakeholders and the local community.”
