Hosts Correct ‘Trump Misinformation’
Republicans: “Harris Supporters, Not Journalists”

In the US presidential TV debate on the 10th (local time), the presence of ABC anchor David Muir (51) and anchor Lindsey Davis (47) who were the hosts was also notable. The two of them were particularly quick to correct the facts when Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said false information. They also pressured him to answer vague or off-topic questions by saying, “Please answer yes or no.”

This is in contrast to the fact that CNN, the host of the TV debate between Trump and then-Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on June 27, did not conduct real-time fact-checking, saying, “The presidential candidates should receive more attention than the hosts.”

Muir discussed the unprecedented storming of the Washington Capitol on January 6, 2021 by Trump’s supporters who refused to accept his 2020 election defeat. When asked whether Trump, who was criticized for inciting violent protests by his supporters, had any regrets about that, Trump continued to make off-topic comments.

Then anchor Muir said, “Answer yes or no,” and candidate Trump claimed, “This happened because then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, didn’t do her job properly.” A similar pattern continued when asked about illegal immigration, abortion rights, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Anchor Muir maintained a good relationship with candidate Trump, becoming the first terrestrial journalist to interview him exclusively at the White House in January 2017, when candidate Trump took office. Anchor Davis also co-hosted the third TV debate between candidate Trump and President Biden in 2020.

The two anchors also corrected the facts of Trump’s remarks five times in total. Fox News reported that they did not correct Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’s remarks even once. CNN reported that Trump had more than 30 false or misleading statements, while Harris had only one false statement. The New York Times (NYT) fact-checked 17 false statements by Trump and 2 by Harris.

Trump responded by saying that the two ABC anchors who moderated the debate were unfriendly to him and that he had “put them in a three-on-one matchup” with Harris. Republican Rep. Ellis Stefanik, a pro-Trump ally, also criticized the two anchors, calling them “Harris supporters, not ‘journalists.’” However, she insisted that “Trump won the debate by a landslide.”
