In June 2022, ANTEL lost its monopoly in the provision of fiber optic services to homes, as eleven cable operators were authorized to offer this service independently. This criticized and controversial decision by the government of Luis Lacalle Pou allows the cable television companies install their own fiber optic infrastructure and develop their own networkswhich effectively ended ANTEL’s monopoly on the provision of cable Internet services to homes.

This measure was justified as a way to support cable television companies, especially in rural areas of the country, but it was criticized as an action that undermines ANTEL’s income.

As part of this regulation, last year, eleven cable operators received authorization to offer these services starting this year. They have a period of fifteen months to put their services on the market, according to the new regulations.

The first competitor to ANTEL’s fiber optics takes to the field

The cable company Nuevo Siglo announced that it will be the first to offer connectivity at home, in the new liberalized market after the breakup of the state monopoly. The first phase of Fiber optic internet installation has been launched in the La Blanqueada neighborhoodand the company will ensure that they will extend to other areas of Montevideo in the near future.

The company states that they will offer an “exceptional” speed service, which allows the connection of devices of all types that use the Internet to function, such as the so-called “internet of things” objects, IOT, for its acronym in English.

The cable companies will now be able to compete with ANTEL in services such as internet + cable TV, and even streaming platforms depending on the agreements they reach.
