Anthem’s Final Flight: BioWare’s Loot Shooter to Shut Down January 12th

The ambitious, yet ultimately troubled, action role-playing game Anthem will officially cease operations on January 12, marking the end of support for the BioWare title. Electronic Arts announced the decision to sunset the game, effectively rendering it unplayable, after years of struggling to revitalize the project following a disappointing launch. This closure signifies a significant chapter closing for both the developer and the gaming community.

A Rocky Launch and Unfulfilled Potential

Initially released in February 2019, Anthem promised a shared-world experience centered around customizable exosuits known as Javelins. The game quickly garnered attention for its stunning visuals and fluid movement, but was plagued by a multitude of issues. Players reported repetitive gameplay, a lackluster story, and a frustrating loot system.

“The game was visually impressive, but lacked the depth and engaging content needed to sustain a long-term player base,” one analyst noted.

Despite BioWare’s attempts to address these concerns through updates and a planned “Next” overhaul, the project failed to gain significant traction. The “Next” overhaul was ultimately canceled in February 2021, signaling the beginning of the end for the game.

EA Confirms Anthem’s End-of-Life

Electronic Arts formally announced the shutdown across multiple gaming news outlets, including Gizmodo, Engadget, IGN, Kotaku, and TechRadar. According to a company release, the decision was made after careful consideration and a realization that further investment in Anthem would not yield the desired results.

The closure will not only remove access to the game itself but also any associated online services. Players are encouraged to enjoy the remaining time with the game before servers are permanently taken offline.
