The Evangelical Church in Brazil has exploded in number of temples and theological currents in the last decades, something that will be approached by the renowned anthropologist Juliano Spyer, author of the book “Povo de Deus”, in the program “Provoca”, presented by Marcelo Tas on TV Cultura.

The interview with Spyer will take place this Tuesday (5th) and should reveal what the latest research has been pointing to about evangelical growth in Brazil. According to data from the Center for Metropolis Studies (CEM), for example, Brazil recorded a 543% increase in the number of evangelical temples between 1990 and 2019.

This vertiginous growth had already been pointed out by a survey by the Datafolha Institute in 2016. At the time, the agency found that “one in three Brazilians aged 16 or over are currently Evangelicals”.

This was the subject of research carried out by Spyer, resulting in his book, which is a reference with regard to the anthropological view of Brazilian Protestantism.

The anthropologist came to live in a community, being a member of an Assembly of God Church, with the aim of analyzing the religious growth of evangelicals as a national phenomenon.

positive findings

In an interview for Senso magazine, Spyer highlighted several positive points in his research on evangelical churches, saying he was “particularly surprised”, for example, with the way in which Protestant denominations favor learning in peripheral regions, where access to education is precarious.

“The church fulfills the role of a school,” he said. Another highlight given by the anthropologist was the question of the social rehabilitation of people who have already committed crimes and the change in behavior of individuals with a history of violence and substance abuse.

“I was very impressed how in these cases, because of conversion, these men had become good fathers, good companions, ‘fighters’. I have not studied this subject; but I understand that the church offers society a valuable service, which an evangelical friend called ‘recycling souls’”, these he. See too:
